As a young girl, Marne Ryan learned how to use her small fingers in a way that allowed for creation of an attractive garment. At the age of three, she became a seamstress, seeking to emulate her skilled grandmother. Marne Ryan received informal lessons from her mother as well, lessons about the quality of various fabrics. She still recalls the many patterns and shapes that she saw from the air, when her father, a test pilot, would take her up with him in an airplane. Perhaps because the land once viewed by Marne Ryan had a textured appearance, Marne Ryan now creates a textured look on her jewelry.

Each of Marne Ryan’s one-of-a-kind jewelry designs displays the uniqueness achieved through use of a tested fabrication system. The jewelry produced by those familiar with that system demonstrate a texture created by one of two different methods. The metal in some pieces obtained its textured look when a skilled hand put a torch to the metal’s surface. In other jewelry pieces, a roll mill has been used to imprint patterns on the surface of metal.

Once provided with a textured surface, each piece of metal becomes part of a selected jewelry pattern. Marne Ryan relies on a special technique called fusing, in order to join her many pieces of textured metal. Using fusing, Marne Ryan can join two pieces of metal without depending on the availability of a soldering device.
