As a young girl, Marne Ryan learned how to use her small fingers in a way that allowed for creation of an attractive garment. At the age of three, she became a seamstress, seeking to emulate her skilled grandmother. Marne Ryan received informal lessons from her mother as well, lessons about the quality of various fabrics. Today, Marne Ryan studies the quality of metals, and then uses her skilled fingers to mold those metals into beautiful pieces of jewelry.

Marne Ryan has found that her mind is full of ideas for different jewelry designs. She still recalls the many patterns and shapes that she saw from the air, when her father, a test pilot, would take her up with him in an airplane. Perhaps because the land once viewed by Marne Ryan had a textured appearance, Marne Ryan now creates a textured look on her jewelry.

Each of Marne Ryan’s one-of-a-kind jewelry designs displays the uniqueness achieved through use of a tested fabrication system. The jewelry produced by those familiar with that system demonstrate a texture created by one of two different methods. The metal in some pieces obtained its textured look when a skilled hand put a torch to the metal’s surface. In other jewelry pieces, a roll mill has been used to imprint patterns on the surface of metal.

Once provided with a textured surface, each piece of metal becomes part of a selected jewelry pattern. Marne Ryan relies on a special technique called fusing, in order to join her many pieces of textured metal. Using fusing, Marne Ryan can join two pieces of metal without depending on the availability of a soldering device.

Marne Ryan works with 22kt and 18kt gold, as well as working with pieces of sterling silver. She can join the top and bottom edges of a ring or a bracelet, thus giving the resulting piece of jewelry the ability to mirror the contour on an arm or a finger. This well-contoured metal displays marked durability.

Whenever a piece of jewelry contains silver, then that silver needs to be polished. The polishing process begins with submersion of the piece of jewelry in a special solution, a solution that will darken the silver. Once exposed to that darkening process, the silver is polished, highlighting any ridges on the silver. The polished surface develops a patina, one that can change, depending on the chemistry of the skin that touches the polished silver.

Often, a piece of Marne Ryan jewelry must undergo more than one polishing. When sized, a piece of jewelry is subjected to heat. After sizing, a piece of silver jewelry will show its original white color. In order to re-create the special patina, that piece of silver jewelry must once more feel the fine movements of a polishing expert. Once the polished silver touches human skin, it will again display its eye-catching luster.

The completed piece, one of either gold or well polished silver, twists and turns, creating yet another of the fabulous Marne Ryan designs.
